Dunseith, North Dakota is a small rural town located in Rolette County in the northwestern part of the state. It is located along the Turtle Mountains and close to the Canadian border. The population of Dunseith was 1,051 as of the 2010 Census, making it one of the smallest towns in North Dakota.
The town was originally named “Turtle Mountain” after nearby Turtle Mountains, but later changed its name to Dunseith after a family member of one of the area’s first settlers. The first post office opened in 1882 and by 1888 there were three churches, two stores and two hotels.
The economy of Dunseith is based mainly on agriculture with some light industry. The largest employer in town is a potato processing plant which processes potatoes grown by local farmers into potato chips for markets across the country. Other agricultural activities include cattle ranching, wheat farming and dairy production. The town also serves as a regional hub for shopping with several stores located downtown including grocery stores and clothing retailers.
The Turtle Mountain State Park is located just outside Dunseith and offers visitors an array of outdoor activities such as camping, biking, hiking and fishing. There are many lakes nearby for visitors to explore including Lake Metigoshe which offers swimming and boating opportunities. There are also multiple Native American reservations nearby including Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Reservation which offers cultural experiences such as powwows, museums and cultural centers for visitors to learn about Native American history and culture.
